Speedway Miracle Tournament Helps Change Kids’ Health “fore” Kids at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital

On the course for more than 31 years, Speedway, a part of 7-Eleven family of brands, has partnered with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to raise more than $150 million for local children’s hospitals like Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Speedway makes giving easy and possible at the local level – gathering donations from in-store campaigns, vendor promotions and the annual Speedway Miracle Tournament, June 13-14, 2022.

Nearly 650 golfers come together to raise funds and allow children the opportunity to get the specialized care they need. Hospitals transform how they meet urgent needs, while also maintaining an exceptional standard of care for children like Maja.

Maja arrived at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital on August 22, 2018. She was referred by her orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Harry Temple, to Dr. Maggie Fader who became her oncologist. Maja had a cancerous tumor in her right femur and was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Her right leg was in a full cast for three months and she was in a wheelchair and crutches for about one year.

Maja responded very well to the chemotherapy and underwent surgery to implant an extendable prosthesis. As she grows, the prosthetic can be adjusted to the same length of her left leg. 

Since the implant, Maja has had two lengthening surgeries and she will continue to have the surgeries until she stops growing. Once she stops growing, she will have one last surgery with a permanent prosthesis.

Last year in October 2020, she unexpectedly had to undergo surgery because scar tissue in her knee was preventing her from straightening her leg, keeping it stuck in a 90 degree angle and she has not been able to bend her knee past 30 degrees since. She continues to receive physical therapy daily and sees her oncologist and surgeon every six months for checkups.

Maja was able to join at this year’s Speedway Miracle Tournament event, where she shared her story, got to know incredible advocates, enjoyed some treats and had a lot of fun.
